Keeping up with Wittenberg's continued committment to serve others, two groups of Wittenberg volunteers teamed up yesterday with Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area. With the help of Kati Miller-Holland, an area coordinator for Lutheran Disaster Response (and a Wittenberg parent), the afternoon was filled with service.
One group of volunteers helped sort donations that will be used to furnish apartments for refugees relocating to the D.C. area. The refugees have almost nothing when they arrive in the U.S., so these donations are very needed (visit this website to find out how items can be donated to Lutheran Social Services for refugee families: http://www.lssnca.org/volsub02.htm). Outside of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Falls Church, VA, Witt alumni spent the sunny afternoon rooting though clothing, furniture and dishwares to make it easier for other volunteers to know what had been donated.
The other group of volunteers, made up of current Witt students, put the donations into action by actually furnishing an apartment in Silver Spring, MD for a refugee family from Bhutan. They spent time with the refugee family, moved in furniture, stocked the kitchen full of supplies, and even had a lesson in learning how to fold fitted sheets. After the service, both groups met up to learn more about the refugees, how Lutheran Social Services helps them, and how Wittenberg can stay involved. Service in D.C. was a success!
