Wittenberg Alumna Wins An Oprah Winfrey “Harpo Hookup”
Springfield, Ohio – On Friday, April 29, 2011, millions around the world tuned in for the wedding of the decade, as England’s Prince William and his bride Kate Middleton exchanged their vows. People everywhere, fascinated by the storybook nuptials and the grandeur of the day, were up before dawn to watch the live coverage.
Later that same day, Jessica Bruce, Wittenberg University class of 2010, experienced her own fairy tale, at a taping of the The Oprah Winfrey Show that millions witnessed on Thursday, May 5. It started with an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., that Winfrey awarded Bruce and her boyfriend, Joseph Malagisi.
However, Winfrey and Malagisi had one more surprise for Bruce, and it went like this…
“I love you with everything that I am, and I want to make you the happiest person alive,” said Malagisi, on bended knee next to Winfrey on her Chicago studio stage. “I want to grow old with you. So it would be a great honor, Jessica, if you will be my bride. Be my wife. Be my best friend. Jessica, will you marry me?”
“Oh my God,” Bruce said. “Yes!”
But it did not end there, Winfrey then proceeded to bestow upon the couple “the royal treatment – Disney Fairy Tale Weddings is throwing them and 100 guests a wedding they’ll never forget in Walt Disney World take will take place in August or September of 2012.”
Bruce will arrive for her nuptials in Cinderella’s coach for a ceremony in the wedding pavilion, which overlooks Cinderella’s castle.
“I will be given a wedding planner to decide on reception location and all of the other details,” Bruce said. “Joey and I will spend our wedding night in the suite in Cinderella’s Castle.”
Not one to leave details hanging, Winfrey then dealt with the couple’s honeymoon.
“She is sending us on a seven-night Disney Cruise of our choice, where we will be in the stateroom with a veranda overlooking the ocean, all meals and everything is paid for,” Bruce said.
“Needless to say, it has been a crazy few days. It all went so fast. I barely got to talk to Oprah, but she was wonderful. [She was] so nice, everything you would think she would be.
“Since it was her Hook-Ups show she also gave out lots of stuff to the audience and us, including a huge Disney gift basket.”
Also on the show were Jessica Simpson, who gave them items in her line, and Johnny Depp, who took them to a theatre following the show for a private screening of his new Pirates movie, which he watched with them. The show ended with Grammy-winning artist Lady Gaga, who performed “Born This Way” and “You and I.”
Come late summer 2012, Wittenberg’s fairy tale princess, Jessica Bruce, will become a bride with a scrapbook filled with memories of the fable she and Joey Malagisi shared, compliments of Oprah Winfrey and Walt Disney World, Orlando, Fla.
