Springfield, Ohio – For the 11th consecutive year, Wittenberg’s science departments present hands-on programming for 80 to 100 fourth to 12th grade girls as they host the annual Girl Scout Science Night from 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 8, in the Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center, 350 Bill Edwards Drive.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., and the cost is $6 per registered Girl Scout and $18 for unregistered girls (includes $12 membership fee). Financial assistance is available. The admission price includes a Girl Scout patch and a light dinner.

Groups of 20-25 girls will rotate through educational sessions organized and presented by faculty members in the biology, chemistry, physics and math/computer science departments. Wittenberg students will assist faculty members in presenting the sessions.

Students assisting the chemistry sessions include Alaina Engdahl, class of 2013 from Columbus, Ohio; Brianna Watson, class of 2013 from Dayton, Ohio; Kacia Nolan, class of 2012 from Speedway, Ind.; and Kevin To, class of 2013 from Springfield, Ohio. Students assisting the physics department sessions include Nate Monday, class of 2011 from Marblehead, Ohio; Mandy Fagan, class of 2014 from Chelmsford, Mass.; Savannah Kiser, class of 2012 from Warren, Pa.; and Susannah Engdahl, class of 2013 from Columbus, Ohio.

The program began in 2001 through the efforts of Mike Crotty, Wittenberg class of 2002. The father of three girls, Crotty approached members of Wittenberg’s science departments after seeing his daughters’ enthusiasm for stargazing during an open house at Weaver Observatory. The university and its science faculty agreed to the concept, and the program quickly became a reality.

With the program’s goal of interesting girls in careers in the sciences, the sessions are planned with a bit of the wow factor. Contact Carrie Hurley, program services specialist, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, at 937-279-6542 or email carriehurley@girlscoutsofwesternohio.org.
