Springfield, Ohio – Wittenberg University Assistant Professor of Art Daniel McInnis presents a Gallery Talk at the Opening Reception for “Presence: Photographs by Daniel McInnis” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, March 25, in the Wittenberg-Halley Gallery at the Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University. The event is free and open to the public.

“Presence: Photographs by Daniel McInnis” will be on display in the Wittenberg-Halley Gallery at the Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University through Sunday, May 29.

“This portfolio documents the tension between full-body portraiture and the subjects’ indigenous spaces,” McInnis said. “I use the term ‘indigenous’ loosely as most of the subjects are photographed in their own neighborhoods, while a few are in spaces that have symbolic meaning to them alone.”

McInnis explained that “these images are not so much an attempt at intimacy, but rather a celebration of variation, exploration of choice (locality, clothing) and a consideration of personal detail captured with the abilities of 8 x 10 film and view camera.”

McInnis received his BFA in Film and Photography from Ithaca College and his MFA in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

From 2000 to 2003, he lived in the United Arab Emirates where he taught as an assistant professor of photography for the Department of Visual Communications at The American University in Dubai, where he began a long project photographing black and white landscapes using the minimalist work of Harry Callahan and Hiroshi Sugimoto as inspiration. This international photographic survey titled “Balance” was exhibited twice in Dubai, at the University of California at Berkeley, at the Brooklyn Collective Art Gallery and recently at Wittenberg University’s Ann Miller Gallery.
