Springfield, Ohio – For the third time in as many years, local poets will gather to pay tribute to Wittenberg University Professor Emeritus of English and Yeats Scholar Conrad Balliet for his efforts over the years to promote poetry throughout the Miami Valley.
The Poetry Reading takes place from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, in the Student Union Discovery Room, E163A, at Wright State University, 3640 Colonel Glenn Highway, Dayton, Ohio. The event is free and open to the public, and everyone is invited to bring a poem to read during “open mic” time.
During his tenure at Wittenberg from1961 to 1992, Balliet taught courses on Victorian literature and Irish writers, focusing on Yeats and Joyce. For many years he has read poetry as the host of a radio show, Conrad’s Corner, on WYSO 91.3-FM, which is broadcast at 7:59 p.m. weekdays, and at 2:20 p.m. Saturdays. Balliet is also a regular on the WYSO show Weekend Edition Sunday, which can be heard at 10:30 a.m. each week.
The WYSO website quotes Balliet as saying he taught “English and Anglo-Irish literature at Wittenberg, and he would read and recite poetry whenever possible, and encourage people to share his appreciation and love of meter and rhyme.”
Balliet’s memoir, cb: Remembrances, is available in the Wittenberg Bookstore.
