Caitlin Coleman ’05 Embraces Passion for Service

Screen shot 2009-12-18 at 3.16.42 PMJust four years after graduating from Wittenberg, Caitlin Coleman already has a reputation among her friends for going out of her way to help others. In fact, they lightheartedly tease her about it sometimes. Like many alumni and students, Coleman is passionate about the well-known Wittenberg motto “Having light we pass it on to others.” From her days in high school volunteering to working at Wittenberg in the Office of Community Service to her job today as a volunteer coordinator at LifeSource Blood Services, the largest blood bank in Illinois, she is a living example of dedication to service.

Helen “Copey” Copenhaver Hanes ’39 Lives Life For Others

Wittenberg values education, passion and commitment to community. Helen “Copey” Copenhaver Hanes has spent a lifetime sharing those values in extraordinary measure, so much so that her alma mater recently bestowed on her an Alumni Citation Award for exceptional personal or professional accomplishment that has brought honor to Wittenberg. Her journey to Wittenberg began in Virginia, where her father, The Rev. Eldridge Copenhaver, served as interim president of then-Marion College, a Lutheran women’s junior college, during the Depression. The family lived on campus, and Hanes completed two years there before coming to Wittenberg, where her father had earlier received an honorary doctorate of divinity.

Michelle E. Stevens ‘91

Earns Top Rankings As A Fund Manager

Michelle E. Stevens says “it felt great, but was kind of surprising” when she was named the No. 2 fund manager out of 8,000 by Forbes Magazine last fall. Perhaps she should not have been so surprised; after all, one of the mutual funds she had been managing at Transamerica Investment Management LLC had been ranked No. 7 out of 100 by Barron’s earlier in the year.

Cindy Wetzel Lentol ’90

Finds Success On The Big Screen

For Cindy Lentol, the opportunity to work alongside such stars as Matthew McConaughey and Tommy Lee Jones probably never entered her mind while at Wittenberg. Although interested in acting, Lentol never pursued the field during her college days, preferring instead to play field hockey, work in the sociology department and immerse herself in college life.

P. Kay Carl ‘59

Chronicles Education Under The Lights Of Las Vegas

The birth and growth of a county school district might not sound like the stuff of books – unless that school district is the nation’s fifth largest and includes Las Vegas, “the entertainment capital of the world.” P. Kay Carl ’59 thought it was a story worth telling, and she would know. For 30 years, Carl worked in the Clark County School District in Nevada and presided over its phenomenal growth.

When Mike Markson graduated from Wittenberg with a degree in economics, he surely didn’t know that 20 years later he would be on the brink of launching his third Internet start-up company. In fact, as he says, “I had no idea what I was going to do then.”

Kevin Kutz ’84

Shares Microsoft’s Story

Originally intent on pursuing a career in foreign policy in Washington, D.C., Kevin Kutz became a bit sidetracked while earning his master’s degree at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. With the energy and excitement of Boston beckoning at their back door, he and his wife, Karen Kirchhoff Kutz ’83, decided to stay there, and Kutz’s rewarding career in public relations began.

Sufiy James Davis ’00 Puts Service First

In true Wittenberg “Pass It On” tradition, Sufiy Davis has dedicated herself to helping others since graduation. In her current capacity with Medco Pharmaceutical in Columbus, Ohio, Davis evaluates patient concerns. Prior to this post, Davis offered a safe atmosphere for children as a childcare provider, which followed her time with St. Vincent Family Center, also in Columbus.

Susan Welker ‘02 Inspires On An International Scale

When international students think of Wittenberg, Susan Welker’s name quickly comes to mind. Since 2003, Welker has worked diligently to share the Wittenberg story with the world, first in her role as the Freeman Project administrator and then as the assistant director of admission/coordinator for international recruitment.

Michael Ann Doran Effron ’98 Leads In Inner-City Classrooms

Whenever Michael Ann Effron speaks about her work, a passion exudes from her face. Since graduating from Wittenberg, Effron has made it her life’s work to teach young people in hopes of preparing them for fulfilling lives.
