Barbara McVicker ’69 still remembers the night she got the call that she never expected. It was a night that changed her life, not only because she spent the next 10 years caring for her ailing parents, but because it eventually launched a whole new career path, educating others about what it means, and what it takes, to be a caregiver to elderly parents.

Forever an outdoor enthusiast and avid gardener, Ohio native Linda McCabe Silich never thought her longtime interests would lead to national press. Yet, the well-known Hamptons landscaper has accomplished that and more with her company, Groundworks Landscaping, based in East Hampton, N.Y.

As a successful pharmaceutical sales representative for 19 years who earned national and regional sales awards, Glenn DeMott ’76 had a good life and a career he enjoyed. He didn’t have to rock the boat and alter his life forever. But when he discovered that his employer Pfizer Inc. was misrepresenting and falsifying scientific research and misleading doctors into promoting off-label uses of prescription drugs (among other things), he knew he had to act. He began what turned out to be an almost fiveyear ordeal to blow the whistle on Pfizer’s illegal activities.

Believing that a career in the legal profession is “a noble call that carries with it a precious responsibility,” John Pelander embodies the best in American law, a fact Arizona Governor Jan Brewer clearly recognized when she appointed him to the state’s highest court last year.

Although Raymar Hampshire quickly found a job in the wealth management department at Merrill Lynch after graduation, he increasingly found himself feeling that something important was missing in his life. “I wasn’t giving back to my community enough,” he says.

As Wittenberg’s senior assistant director of admission and coordinator of New England recruitment, Ann Bixel spends her days traveling throughout the Northeast and having face-to-face conversations with prospective students in hopes of persuading them to consider her alma mater. Based in Boston, Mass. Bixel cannot imagine a better job as she gets to tell the Wittenberg story on a daily basis.

Lauren Schmidt is living proof that a small liberal arts college can earn you a big-time Hollywood career. Although that is not what she planned when she came to Wittenberg, Schmidt has enjoyed an immensely successful career as a television writer and producer. Immediately after graduation, she worked for six years on NBC’s award-winning West Wing, earning a Writers Guild of America nomination in 2003 for an episode she co-wrote and having her first solo episode air in 2004. After writing and co-producing for ABC’s hit show Private Practice, she is now a writer and producer for a new NBC drama, Parenthood, which will debut in spring 2010.
