Time for turkey!

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

One week left until Thanksgiving break! I can’t believe all the holidays are approaching and that there are only 4 weeks left of the semester. Some of my housemates and I just went to a fraternity’s philanthropy event where we had a delicious Thanksgiving feast, and it reminded me that turkey is definitely my favorite part of November. Today all the sororities hosted “Passport Day” for girls to come around and get tours of each of the houses. I think it went well and hopefully it got everyone excited to go Greek! This past week was also really fun since my hip hop class and professor along with a few other campus organizations hosted a hip hop event in the student center with tons of student displays, live performers, and many well-known hip hop names. It ended up being really successful and I’m always impressed with how many students participate in school functions.

In the world of sports, I hope everyone has been tuning into volleyball! They’re our only fall sport still competing and they just earned their way to the Elite 8 of the NCAA! We all plan on heading to Saint Louis this Friday to cheer them on! Also, as basketball is about to start up, SAAC is hosting Wittness Wednesday this week so people can come win prizes, watch some hoops, and get jazzed about the upcoming season!

These past few weeks have been busy, but there’s never a dull moment on campus! Good luck to Witt Volleyball, and I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Break (and Black Friday if you’re like me!)

Homecoming!

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Sorry if everyone is tired of my frequent blogs, but I’m just so excited for this weekend that I can’t resist! Homecoming weekend is always one of the best weekends of the year for both students and alumni. I love the football, tailgating, and just seeing recent graduates who constantly remind me how jealous they are that I get to still be having a blast at Witt while they work real jobs. But the decorations are up and the festivities have already begun! They set up wooden tigers last night that were free for the taking, so I took one to put in our lawn which we plan on dressing up with tons of Witt apparel! I’m also looking forward to the game and the alumni bbq that my sorority is having beforehand. There Should be one action-packed weekend! Go tigers.

On a different note, I’m also excited for Sunday too. SAAC has organized volunteer work through the Special Olympics who’s coming to do some swimming in the pool. My field hockey team gets to swim with the kids this weekend so I’m glad we get the opportunity for us to help out as a team. Anyone that’s back tonight should also come to our game vs. Kenyon!

Hope everyone has a great homecoming weekend filled with school spirit!

It’s Fall Break already??

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Midterms, changing leaves, and fall break right around the corner! This is one of the best seasons at Witt since the hollow is flooded with gorgeous trees, leaves, and people enjoying the last few warm days before the chilly part of fall begins.I can’t believe the semester is already halfway over. It’s gone by so fast, but I know we’re all anxiously awaiting our fall break plans. For me, I plan on staying at Witt for field hockey practice and also might go home with some friends to do some shopping and enjoy some home-cooked meals! Since I probably won’t get enough time to go home to Colorado, my parents decided to come see me for a few days which I’m definitely looking forward to.

Our field hockey season is wrapping up, and we’re expected to make the NCAC tournament, so wish us luck with the remainder of our season!

I’ll leave you all with a fall-related joke: What do you call a man in a pile of leaves?….. Russell!!

Greek Kids on the Block

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

This week is Greek Week at Witt! It’s been action-packed with events every night, but it’s been great to spend time competing as a sorority as well as getting a chance to hang out with the other sororities/fraternities on campus. Monday night we had a bbq and last night we played Family Feud in co-ed teams. Everyone gets super dressed up and it’s been a lot of fun so far! Can’t wait for flag football and the talent show.

Last night was also the athlete social in Founder’s which was a lot of fun also. Lots of food (as I predicted) and a good way for us to all get together and bond over the hours we spend playing sports at Witt. We had an overnight trip this weekend for field hockey, but we upped our record to 4-1 in conference, so hopefully we can pull out some more w’s this week against Depauw and Wooster!

School is… well it’s school. But college wouldn’t be college without the all-nighters and coffee buzzes! Junior year has definitely proven to be the hardest so far, but I think I’ll manage to survive.

Happy Fall Everyone!

Tiger Up

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Hello! I figured I will blog instead of diving into my first paper assignment of the year. Not much to report about the weekend… we were supposed to have an away game that got postponed because of all the rain up north (definitely Irene 2.0!) So now we have two games this upcoming weekend, our first home game and the one to be made up at Oberlin. Very excited to play at Witt finally, and hoping that we’ll have some fans come support on Saturday! Just a quick advertising pitch: Tiger Squad will give you TWO stamps on your tiger card and students can get a free hotdog and soda for coming!

Today at our SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) meeting, we began putting together some plans for the athlete social in Founders! I’m looking forward to getting together with all the teams to bond and eat some serious amounts of food! Maybe the football players will leave enough for everyone else this year… Also this week is informal recruitment for my sorority, so I’m excited to get to know the new members and again, eat lots of food.

School is pretty much in full force now, so I should probably be getting back to my paper.  Hope everyone has a good week, see you at the field hockey game!

Labor Day Weekend

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! The past few days have  been a blast for me.  There were quite a few alumni who came back to campus and it was great to see them all. The lightning and pouring rain continued all night, but it sure didn’t stop everyone from mud-sliding in the hollow. And I loved getting the chance to storm watch with friends on the porch, it’ s one of my favorite pastimes at Witt. I also went to the volleyball and football games this weekend which were both so exciting that I barely have a voice today. Volleyball beat two teams ranked #2 and #6 nationally, and football was delayed due to weather, but if they win this afternoon it will be their 700th win in program history! Great weekend for tiger athletics.

I’m secretly looking forward to some canceled classes tomorrow, but I’m excited for the week ahead. We have two field hockey games against Earlham and Oberlin, I begin observing in a classroom for my education class, and I’ll start work at the Oral Communication Center since it opens tomorrow. We also have some dj’s coming to perform live for my Philosophy of Hip-Hop class so I’m getting very excited for that!

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!

survived the first week!!!

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

So excited to be a blogger! Let me introduce myself… my name is Kellen Morrissey, I’m a junior math major, with education and business minors, and I play field hockey and lacrosse. I spent my summer at home in Colorado, as well as in Lesotho, Africa for a month for a trip with Dr. Rosenberg and 37 other Witt students. Going to Lesotho was an incredible experience and I would definitely encourage everyone to go!

As incredible as my summer was, I have been so glad to be back at Wittenberg! I came back to campus a few weeks early for field hockey preseason and some intense 2-aday practices. Our field hockey team won the NCAC season last year, so we have some big shoes to fill this year. We scrimmaged last night at OWU and I think it got us all pumped for our first game in less than a week!

This year I’m living in my sorority house which has been quite the adventure already. We’ve all had a great time catching up, watching movies, and enjoying the food prepared by our new cook (definitely the best part of living here). My classes this year might be challenging, but so far I’m very excited about them. My “Philosophy of Hip-Hop Culture” class has been one of the most interesting electives that I’ve taken so far, and one of my upper-level math classes has only 6 people which has really helped to understand the lessons and get help from the professor. Other than school and field hockey, I’m working for my coach as an office assistant and as a consultant in the Oral Communication Center. It should be a busy and exciting year, and I can’t believe I’m a junior!!  It’s been great to see my Wittenberg family and it makes me feel at home to be back! I’m looking forward to blogging about my hopefully fantastic year!
